The Gift of Prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:1-5)

The Gift of Prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:1-5)

Main Point: We should desire the gift of prophesy as it up-build, encourage and console believers and pre-believers.

  1. What is prophecy?
Prophecy in the New Testament is based on receiving a spontaneous revelation from God that is for edifying believer and convicting non-believers. It is always subject to the authority of Scripture and the discernment of the church. (AMKPC’s Theological Statement and Guidelines on the Practice of Spiritual Gifts, 2000)
    A. Prophecy does not equate to the authority of Scripture
    B. There is a need to “weigh” prophecies.
  2. Who/what is it for?
    A. Edify believers.
    B. Minister to pre-believers.
  3. How to practice prophesy?
    A. Not all will have the gift
    B. Love and for the benefit of others.

Reflection
I. Have I prayed and sincerely asked God for this gift?
II. Am I growing towards Christian maturity (having a consistent diet of God’s word and prayer)?

III. Do I desire this gift for the benefit of the church, and not for my own glory or status or prestige?
